Tom dislikes the thought of staying in a tiny flat in a dull house with his aunt and uncle, but when he arrives he finds mystery and adventure every night when he goes outside into a beautiful garden and plays with a lovely orphan girl. The girl is the old landlady of the house; the garden is part of her dreams of the past.
